-----Original Message----- From: Taryn G. Sent: Friday, June 10, 2005 1:13 AM Subject: updated calendar Hi all, I've included the dates the group went over last night. [See attached updated calendar] . Please note there is a Nuclear Free Oly ordinance petition (in favor of passing the ordinance) that Marco has drafted and is refining based on recent group feedback (see current bullet points for petition language below). It is hoped that TJ will take into consideration the points that Marco has suggested to ask for and give us feedback about what is actually being proposed/drafted by the council committee that is doing this drafting/proposed ordinance work. Ideally, we would like the petition to harmonize closely with what is actually being worked on in committee language wise. Marco expressed interest in having folks go out in 2 people teams to canvass and get signatures. I think this could be effective as well and would be willing to do some canvassing for this too. We could plug into the calendar dates to do this if we can get some others to join in as well. I hope others think this is a good idea too. If so, It may also be good to have a quarter sheet handout to leave with folks that gives them some follow-up action steps and a few talking points for LTE's while doorbelling/canvassing: a.. Send email to Oly city Council in favor of ordinance (include url for council emails). b.. Testify in favor of ordinance at the upcoming council mtgs (upcoming dates/talking points). c.. write LTE's. (talking points) Also, it would be really great to get a looksey at the draft of the ordinance so we all know what is being proposed in order to be able to articulate this while doorbelling/canvassing. If you have corrections or changes to this calendar please feel free to let me know and I will make the changes. In addition, if you have suggestions for strategy implementation regarding the tactics that is good to know as well. TJ if you can help us by looking at what the points are that Marco expressed in his petition draft and giving feedback about how the committee is leaning that would be great. Here are the points that Marco bulleted for the spirit of language inclusion in the ordinance based on the previous expressions of a recent OMJP meeting discussion about this when TJ was present: 1) The city of Olympia will be prohibited from forming and commercial relationship with any business involved in the manufacturing or proliferation of nuclear weapons. 2) All trafficking of nuclear weapons or other nuclear substances including depleted uranium (DU), through the city limits would be prohibited. 3) The city of Olympia would not use any substance in constructions of its roads sidewalks, buildings, parks , or any other public spaces or venues that would contain depleted uranium as byproduct. 4) The Olympia city Fire and Police Departments will inform at least 48 hours in advance if there is trafficking of any product that has the possibility of containing DU in it or have the residue of DU on it or if any vehicle plans to enter city limits which may contain DUE in it or have the residue of DU on it. 5) The city of Olympia will make it part of its duties to investigate and implement peaceful alternatives to global conflict and work to foster greater international security based on trust and solidarity. Please share your feedback, especially TJ, if you have any and thank you for championing this issue in service to your community. ~Taryn
