Subject: [OMJP] USS Olympia: Navy letter to Mayor Foutch Date: Sat, 22 May 2004 13:34:02 -0700 From: Carrie Lybecker The city of Olympia received a letter from the Navy to Mayor Foutch, written April 08 and stamped "received" on April 20. See text at http://www.omjp.org/USSOLYMPIALetsToCC1.pdf. [Corrected: text at http://www.omjp.org/USSOLYMPIALetToCC.pdf] Yet at the city council meeting last Tuesday, May 18, councilmembers stated that they had received word of the proposed submarine visit just the previous week (as also reported in The Olympian May 19). Who knew what when? Was information withheld from councilmembers and if so, by whom and why? In addition, the letter states: "OLYMPIA is also preparing for her next six-month deployment to the Western Pacific, which will be as part of the CARL VINSON Carrier Strike Group in February 2005. Fortunately, the ship's schedule permits a short visit to our namesake city, Olympia, at the end of May and beginning of June. This visit will be tied to other operations, which OLYMPIA will be conducting in the area." What are these other operations and where are they being conducted? Do they pose a threat to our environment and the public? Are they related to the unbelievably coincidental appearance of the Army in our port? Further, the letter makes obvious the "might Oly's" participation in war maneuvers. This submarine has no business in the Port of Olympia. Carrie
