Subject: [OMJP] Militarization of the Port of Olympia Date: Thu, 20 May 2004 21:02:17 -0700 From: Carrie Lybecker I've thought about this some more. 1) We have a teensy tiny port, hardly more than a fishing village and genteel urban waterfront. Our port is not set up for major shipping or trade. 2) Fort Lewis is, as the crow flies geographically, directly across from the Port of Tacoma. It is also 30-45 minutes south of another major port, the Port of Seattle. 3) It makes no sense whatsoever that the Army would have any need to use our sleepy little port when it has access to much better ports (for its purposes) in Tacoma and Seattle. 4) It makes no sense that Fort Lewis convoys would travel an hour south to a comparitively substandard port. 5) Somehow, the Navy (USS Olympia) and the Army just happened to have decided that they both needed to use our port during the same time period. I don't believe it is credible that a nuclear-powered submarine AND ships receiving Army cargo could simultaneously occupy a harbor of our type without extensive prior coordination, if not between them, than at least with the Port Authority. Let me say that again: the Navy and the Army could not simultaneously occupy our port without coordination and planning by someone. So the question remains, why here? I do not for an instant believe this is random coincidence. I think it is part of a coordinated plan, and of course I don't know its purpose. Carrie
