| PATRIOT Act Forum February 18, 2004 The Olympia Center Olympia, Washington Tonight's forum began with anthropologist David Price reviewing the trajectory of government spying, infiltration and harassment over the past century. Forum participants especially appreciated his cultural prop, a two-foot-high stack of FBI files on Margaret Mead--and he only brought half of them! Dr. Price is Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at St. Martin's College, Lacey, Washington. His new book Threatening Anthropology: McCarthyism and the FBI's Surveillance of Activist Anthropologists is scheduled for release in March and may be pre-ordered now via amazon.com.
Carrie Lybecker discussed the USA Patriot Act, particularly its effects on Constitutional rights. Carrie is a graduate student studying public policy at The Evergreen State College. Fortunately, the ACLU and other organizations, as well as more than 250 communities across the country representing 44 million citizens, have moblized to oppose Patriot's infringement on Constitutionally-garunteed freedoms. Heather Francks of the ACLU discussed proposed national legislation (SAFE), the oganization's activities (see Safe & Free campaign), Patriot II, and CAPPS II.
