It will propably go through one more draft after I talk some of it up with TJ PETITION TO DECLARE THE CITY OF OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON A NUCLEAR FREE ZONE Since the end of World War II, the United States has played a significant role in developing, producing, transporting, storing, processing, proliferating and using nuclear weapons. Far from meeting its objective of ensuring greater global security, these policies have failed to resolve global conflicts and have contributed to further violence in the world. We, the undersigned citizens of Olympia, WA, support our council in adopting "The City of Olympia Nuclear Free Zone Act." We believe that it is possible to create global security through peaceful means and encourage the Olympia City Council to use the following guidelines in drafting our law. 1. The Olympia City Council will prohibit the developing, producing, transporting, storing, processing, disposing of, and use of nuclear weapons within the City of Olympia. No facility, equipment, components, supplies or substance for the development, production, transportation, storage, processing, disposal or use of nuclear weapons shall be allowed in the City of Olympia. Nor shall person, corporation, laboratory or institution or other entity in the City of Olympia knowingly and intentionally engaged in development, testing, evaluation, production, maintenance, storage, transportation and/or disposal of nuclear weapon or the components of nuclear weapons shall commence any such work within the City of Olympia. 2. The Olympia City Council shall grant no awards or contracts for any purpose to any person, firm, corporation or entity which is knowingly or intentionally engaged in the development, research, production, maintenance, storage, transportation and/or disposal of nuclear weapons or their components. 3. The City of Olympia will prohibit the use any substance that contains byproducts of nuclear waste, including but not limited to use of depleted uranium (DU), in the construction of its roads, sidewalks, buildings, parks, or any other public space or venue owned by or under the jurisdiction of the City of Olympia. 4. The Olympia Fire Department and the Olympia Police Departments will be notified at least 48 hours in advance if there is the transporting of any nuclear substance of any materials that contains nuclear waste as a byproduct through city limits. 5. The Olympia City Council will make it part of its on-going duties to investigate and attempt peaceful alternatives to global conflicts and work to foster greater international security through trust and solidarity.
